Akureyrarbær is the official name for the Municipality of Akureyri, a town in northern Iceland. It is the country's fifth most populous municipality and the largest outside the Capital Region, often nicknamed the "Capital of North Iceland." Akureyri is a significant port and fishing center, and its history dates back to the 9th century, receiving its municipal charter in 1786. Laxdalshús, located at Hafnarstræti 11, is the oldest house in Akureyrarbær, built in 1795.
