The European Commission is a key institution of the European Union, acting as its executive body and responsible for proposing legislation, implementing policies, and overseeing the application of EU treaties. While Iceland is not an EU member, the European Commission maintains a Delegation to Iceland to foster political, economic, and cultural relations, and Iceland's application for EU membership, though currently on hold, remains legally active. The Commission has recently been examining the possibility of banning AI applications that generate certain types of images, with the EU's AI Act, which includes prohibitions on AI systems posing unacceptable risks, having entered into force in August 2024.
