Borgarleikhúsið, also known as the Reykjavík City Theatre, is one of Iceland's oldest and most prestigious cultural institutions, with its history tracing back to the founding of the Reykjavík Theatre Company in 1897. It is the municipal theatre of Reykjavík and, alongside the National Theatre of Iceland, serves as one of the nation's two eminent dramatic stages. The theatre stages approximately 9-13 new productions annually, attracting between 150,000 and 200,000 guests each year, making it the most popular theatre in Iceland. "Mömmó" (Motherplay) by Paula Vogel was the last play to premiere at Borgarleikhúsið for the current theatre season, opening on March 13, 2026.
