Holtavörðuheiði is a significant mountain pass and heath in Northwest Iceland, located in Húnaþing vestra. It is a crucial section of Route 1, the country's main ring road, connecting the Borgarfjörður region to Hrútafjörður. The pass reaches an elevation of 407 meters (1,335 feet) and is known for its challenging driving conditions, especially during winter, often experiencing snow, ice, and strong winds that lead to road closures. It also hosts a monitoring station operated by Vegagerðin (the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration) to provide real-time information on road and weather conditions.
