Ölfusá

Staður

The Ölfusá is a powerful and voluminous river in southern Iceland, originating from the confluence of the Hvítá and Sog rivers north of Selfoss and flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. It is Iceland's largest river by volume, with an average discharge of 423 m³/s. The river is significant for its rich ecosystem, supporting salmon and trout, and has historically been important for local communities for fishing and freshwater supply. A notable historical event associated with the Ölfusá occurred in 1944 when the bridge over the river at Selfoss collapsed under a truck, an event commemorated in an exhibition at the Árnesinga Museum in Eyrarbakki.
