Vestmannaeyjar

Staður

Vestmannaeyjar, also known as the Westman Islands, is a municipality and archipelago located off the south coast of Iceland. It consists of 15 islands and numerous rock stacks, with Heimaey being the largest and only inhabited island, home to approximately 4,639 residents as of 2024. The islands are geologically young, formed by submarine volcanic eruptions, and gained international attention in 1973 due to the Eldfell volcano eruption on Heimaey, which led to the evacuation of the entire population and destroyed a significant portion of the town. Fishing is the primary industry, and the islands are also known for their rich history, unique landscape, and as a major Atlantic puffin colony.
