Árneshreppur

Stofnun

Árneshreppur is a municipality located in the Westfjords peninsula of northwestern Iceland, known for being the least populated municipality in the country with approximately 50-60 permanent inhabitants. Historically, it was a center for shark and herring fishing, with remnants of old herring factories now serving as tourist attractions. In March 2026, residents voted to unify with the neighboring municipality of Kaldrananeshreppur, a move that local officials believe could improve the living standards of the residents.
