The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is the domestic intelligence and security service of the United States, and its principal federal law enforcement agency. The FBI has had notable interactions with Iceland, particularly in 2011 when Icelandic authorities, led by then-Interior Minister Ögmundur Jónasson, asked FBI agents to leave the country after they arrived without prior notification to investigate WikiLeaks operations. More recently, the FBI has sought assistance from Icelandic police in investigating cases where illegal activities, such as Bitcoin laundering, were hosted on servers in Iceland, with Icelandic police providing assistance if the alleged conduct violates Icelandic law and a court ruling authorizes it.
