Opened in 1965, it serves as a significant venue for sports, concerts, exhibitions, and conferences, playing a central role in Iceland's sporting and cultural heritage. It has a seating capacity of 5,500 for sports events and up to 11,000 for concerts, and is known for hosting major international events such as the 1972 World Chess Championship and the 1995 World Men's Handball Championship.
