Bandaríkjaher

Stofnun

Bandaríkjaher, or the United States military, has a significant historical and ongoing relationship with Iceland, a founding member of NATO that does not maintain its own standing army. The U.S. military established a presence in Iceland during World War II, initially to prevent Nazi Germany from gaining access to its strategic location. From 1951 to 2006, the U.S. maintained a continuous military presence at Keflavík Air Base as part of the Iceland Defense Force, responsible for Iceland's defense on behalf of NATO. Although permanently stationed forces were withdrawn in 2006, the 1951 bilateral defense agreement remains in force, and the U.S. military continues to conduct cooperative activities and deployments to support NATO's air surveillance mission and other security objectives in Iceland and the North Atlantic region.
