Hellisheiði

Staður

Hellisheiði is a significant lava plateau and mountain pass in southwestern Iceland, located southeast of Reykjavík. It is home to the Hellisheiði Geothermal Plant, which is the largest geothermal power station in Iceland and the eighth-largest in the world. The plant plays a crucial role in Iceland's energy infrastructure, providing electricity and hot water for heating to the capital region. The area is also traversed by Route 1, Iceland's main highway, and is known for its rugged landscape and geothermal activity. Due to its elevation and weather conditions, Hellisheiði often experiences poor visibility and difficult driving conditions, especially during winter.
