Almannavarnir, also known as the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management, is an Icelandic organization responsible for civil protection and emergency management. Operating under the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police, its role is to prepare for, organize, and implement measures to prevent and limit harm to the public, environment, and property from natural disasters, human-caused incidents, epidemics, or military actions. This includes risk analysis, mitigation, coordination, and recovery efforts, as well as operating a national coordination/command center. The organization also works with volunteer groups like the Icelandic Association for Search & Rescue and the Icelandic Red Cross for support during crises.
