Bandaríkjastjórn, or the US Government, plays a significant role in Iceland primarily through defense cooperation and economic ties. The United States was the first country to recognize Iceland's independence in 1944 and both are founding members of NATO. A bilateral defense agreement signed in 1951 remains in force, though US military forces are no longer permanently stationed in Iceland. The US is also one of Iceland's largest foreign investors and a major trading partner.
