Hamas is a Palestinian Sunni Islamist political and militant organization that governs the Gaza Strip. Founded in 1987, its stated goal is the establishment of an independent Islamic state in historical Palestine and it rejects the existence of Israel. In Iceland, Hamas has been a subject of discussion in relation to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with some Icelandic officials and organizations expressing support for Gaza and criticizing Israel's actions, while the Icelandic government has condemned Hamas's terrorist attacks.
