Ríkisstjórnin refers to the Government of Iceland, which is a parliamentary republic. It is responsible for the executive functions of the country, with the Prime Minister serving as the head of government and leading a cabinet of ministers. The government operates within a 63-member unicameral parliament called the Althingi, where a political party or coalition with at least 32 Members of Parliament can form a majority government. The current government coalition was formed after the May 2007 parliamentary elections by the conservative Independence Party (IP) and the center-left Social Democratic Alliance.
