Steingrímsfjarðarheiði

Staður

Steingrímsfjarðarheiði is a mountain pass located in the eastern Westfjords of Iceland, reaching an elevation of 439 meters (1,440 feet) above sea level. It is a significant part of National Road 61 (Djúpvegur), serving as the main connection between Reykjavík and Ísafjörður. The road is approximately 50 km long and is generally kept open during winter, though it can be subject to closures due to weather conditions. Historically, the heath was a challenging route where people often got lost in fog, and a famous story recounts a man surviving 15 days lost there in 1774.
