Staður

Öxi is a mountain pass in the Eastern Region of Iceland, also known as Axarvegur (Route 939). It serves as a 20.5 km (12.73 miles) shortcut between Djúpivogur and Egilsstaðir, reducing the journey by 71 km (44 mi) compared to the Ring Road. The pass reaches an elevation of 539 meters (1,768 feet) and is characterized by a steep, narrow, and winding gravel road with gradients up to 20%. It is generally recommended to avoid Öxi outside of summer and during bad weather due to challenging conditions, including fog, slippery surfaces, and potential for mud from melting snow. The pass is often closed in winter.
